Fu Yuanhui has become a social media star after her enthusiastic remark at the Olympic Games. On Saturday in the National Games, Fu won a gold medal at the 100-meter backstroke final. After the competition, she said in front of the interview camera, “I want to live for another 500 years”, which is from the lyrics of a drama theme song.

She was taking an interview with CCTV after winning the medal in a time of 59’40”. She sang an excerpt from a theme song of the drama Kangxi Dynasty. “I was a bit sorrowful. My condition was bad and I was lacking the power to swim. I never thought I could swim that well,” said the Chinese swimmer.

Putting on the swimsuit she wore at the World Aquatics Championships two years ago, Fu said that it has relieved her worries. “Before the competition, I have been telling myself that it would be great if I could win a medal. I should stay tough and not give up. Although the record this time is not that great, it has saved me and I am so satisfied.”

Fu was not performing well in this year’s Championships, as she felt she could not swim anymore. “The Championships did deal a blow to me. But I won’t give up even if I lost the game,” she said.

She had spent a month doing nothing but training, leaving her with time to think and adjust. “The competition this time tells me not to give up even when I am down. You will ultimately get your reward from your hard work,” said Fu.
