The former Los Angeles Lakers star won an Oscar in the animated short category for "Dear Basketball," a poem he wrote after ending his 20-year career on the court in 2016.

Backstage, Bryant looked lovingly at the statue cradled in his hands and mouthed, "My God."

As executive producer of the six-minute film, Bryant accepted his golden Oscar statue from "Star Wars" star Mark Hamill on Sunday night. He shared the award with Disney animator Glen Keane.

Among those offering their congratulations via Twitter were Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Bill Russell and Shaquille O'Neal, Bryant's former Lakers teammate who admitted, "I'm jealous lol."

He'll add it to an already jammed trophy collection that includes five NBA championships with the Lakers, two Olympic gold medals, NBA Finals most valuable player awards, a league MVP award and four All-Star game MVP awards.

"I feel better than winning championships," he said, a smile never leaving his face. "This is crazy, man, it's crazy."

"You don't have to sit in a tub of ice," Keane told Bryant backstage.

Since hanging up his basketball shoes, Bryant has delved into business (a new Nike shoe) and various forms of storytelling.

The 39-year-old sports superstar believed the nomination validated that he could succeed off the court.

"I mean, as basketball players we're really supposed to shut up and dribble but I'm glad we do a little bit more than that," Bryant said on stage.

Bryant said he heard dismissive comments like "That's cute" when he told people he wanted to become a storyteller in retirement.

"The hardest thing when you start over, you have to quiet the ego and begin again. You have to learn the basics of things," he said.

From the stage, Bryant thanked his wife, Vanessa, and three daughters, naming each of them. He spoke a few words of Italian — a language he learned as a child growing up in Italy — and closed by telling them, "You are my inspiration."

Backstage, Bryant credited Oprah Winfrey and writer-producer Shonda Rhimes for sharing their knowledge of the entertainment business.

"When you have mentors like that in your life, everything tends to work itself out," he said.

Bryant's honor comes in the midst of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements to expose abuse and harassment.

In 2003, Bryant was accused of raping a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado. He admitted to a sexual encounter with the woman but denied the assault allegation.

The criminal case was dropped after Bryant's accuser refused to testify. She later filed a civil suit against him, which was settled out of court and included Bryant's public apology to her, although he admitted no guilt.

Diamond Sports will continue to broadcast NHL, NBA games through upcoming season

HOUSTON (AP) — The largest broadcaster of regional sports networks across the country will continue to televise games for more than a dozen NBA teams and nine NHL teams through the 2024-2025 season even as it moves through bankruptcy proceedings, according to court filings on Friday.

Diamond Sports Group, which broadcasts the Bally-branded regional sports networks, said in the filings it has reached agreements to carry games for 13 NBA teams and nine NHL teams for the upcoming season, according to The Athletic.

“We are appreciative of the ongoing collaboration and long-term partnerships with the NBA and NHL,” David Preschlack, Diamond’s CEO, said in a statement. “These new agreements that cover NBA and NHL linear and (direct-to-consumer) rights are another major milestone and continue Diamond’s momentum toward emergence, which will enable us to provide value for our NBA and NHL partners and continue to serve dedicated local NBA, NHL and MLB fans."

As part of the deals, DSG will drop the contracts of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans.

The deals require the approval of a federal bankruptcy judge. The next hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas is scheduled for Sept. 3.

Friday's deal affects the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs.

The NHL teams are the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues and Tampa Bay Lightning.

DSG also broadcasts some Major League Baseball games, but those are unaffected by Friday's filings.
