Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a congratulatory message to the alumni association of the Huangpu Military Academy on the centennial of the academy and the 40th anniversary of the alumni association.

On behalf of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Xi, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, extended warm congratulations to the alumni association of the academy and sincere greetings to alumni and their relatives at home and abroad. The Huangpu (Whampoa) Military Academy, born out of the first cooperation between the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) and the CPC, stood as the first academy cultivating military officers for the Chinese revolution, Xi said in the letter.

The alumni association of the academy, a CPC-led patriotic mass organization connecting the academy's alumni and their relatives at home and abroad, has served the overall development of the Party and the country and played a positive part in expanding exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait, opposing separatism seeking "Taiwan independence," and pushing forward national reunification, Xi said.

He urged the alumni association to carry on the patriotic and revolutionary tradition of the Huangpu Military Academy, firmly oppose separatism seeking "Taiwan independence" and promote national reunification, and pool wisdom and strength for realizing the Chinese dream.

He expressed the hope that the alumni and their relatives at home and abroad would take an active part in Chinese modernization and contribute to the building of a strong country and the realization of national rejuvenation.

The academy was founded in south China's Guangzhou in June 1924.

Xi's congratulatory letter was read out at a symposium that was held in Beijing on Monday to mark the centennial of the academy and the 40th anniversary of the alumni association.

Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), delivered a speech at the symposium.

Calling the alumni and their relatives at home and abroad an important force in promoting the national reunification and rejuvenation, Wang urged them to get involved in cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, encourage young people on both sides to strengthen exchanges, and jointly carry forward the Chinese culture, so as to help compatriots on the two sides of the Strait get closer and closer through exchanges, thus constantly fostering a stronger sense of national identity.

Wang also urged them to firmly oppose "Taiwan secessionists" and interference by external forces, maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and safeguard the common homeland of the Chinese nation.

CNSA official on Chang'e-6's major breakthroughs

The Chang'e-6 mission made three major technological breakthroughs and a world-first accomplishment, an official of the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said at a press conference about the lunar exploration mission in Beijing on Thursday.

Vice Administrator of CNSA Bian Zhigang noted that the Chang'e-6 mission is a lunar exploration mission adopted with most advanced technologies to date in China's space exploration endeavors.

"The Chang'e-6 mission made breakthroughs in lunar retrograde orbit design and control, intelligent sampling on the moon and lunar ascent from its far side, and realized the first unmanned automatic sample collection and return from the far side of the moon in the world, setting another world record for China's aerospace program," Bian said.

Samples collected from the far side of the moon may help mankind further study the planet, said Li Chunlai, deputy chief designer of the Chang'e-6 mission, at the press conference.

"The samples collected from the South Pole-Aitken Basin may be very different from the samples collected from the front side, which is conducive to a more comprehensive understanding of the geological evolution history of the moon," Li said.

The mission also carried out cooperation with the European Space Agency, France, Italy and Pakistan on four scientific payloads to obtain valuable first-hand scientific data.

"We promised the orbiter and lander will each reserve a volume of 10 kg for international payloads. We fulfilled the promise and accumulated experience for us to perform more complex tasks in the future," Hu Hao, chief designer of the Chang'e-6 mission, told reporters.
