Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra's visit to China is expected to open up new opportunities and further expand cooperation between the two sides, according to the country's foreign minister.

Boluarte is scheduled to arrive in China on Tuesday to begin a five-day state visit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson announced on Monday.

Speaking in the Peruvian capital Lima ahead of the president's trip, Peru's Minister of Foreign Affairs Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea Franco said that Boluarte will have a "very busy schedule" alongside a considerable business delegation, which is expected to visit Beijing as well as the major port cities of Shanghai and Shenzhen.

"There are not even 10 minutes of free time. The Peruvian delegation will have presidents of important Peruvian business associations, along with their Chinese counterparts. We have on both sides the interest to deepen and reach initial agreements for greater cooperation and investment. We are going to present a very wide range of opportunities, where China has great strengths and that the world knows," he said.

Boluarte last met with Xi on the sidelines of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in San Francisco last November, with the two pledging to deepen relations and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Ties were also boosted back in April when Gonzalez-Olaechea paid a visit to China, during which he sensed a readiness for more cooperation and investment in Peru across several areas.

"In the bilateral context, relationships always evolve from less to more. During my official visit to China several weeks ago, I discovered a remarkable willingness to cooperate and invest in Peru. It was emphasized that we provide equal conditions to both foreign and Peruvian investments in accordance with Peruvian law. And of course, Chinese advancements in infrastructure, digital medicine, and various aspects related to the enhancement of living conditions, are the auspices for the next level of the cooperation and investment relationship that Peru appreciates very much," he said.

54th OAS General Assembly held in Asuncion, with focus on regional security

The 54th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) was held in Asuncion, Paraguay from Wednesday to Friday, with a focus on integration and security for the sustainable regional development.

Attending the assembly were representatives from OAS member states, 74 permanent observers and some civil society organizations.

Under the theme of "Integration and Security for the Sustainable Development of the Region," the delegations expressed their pleas for peace, democracy, equality and multilateral work among countries.

Hours before the opening ceremony in Asuncion, the situation in Bolivia, a neighboring country to Paraguay, was top on the agenda.

According to the Bolivian government, Gen. Juan Jose Zuniga on Wednesday led the attempted coup in Palacio Quemado, the government palace, which is located in Murillo Square in the city of La Paz, in a failed bid to oust President Luis Arce from office.

"We do have a very deep concern about the indigenous people in Bolivia, and hopefully this coup d'etat that didn't happen, that things go smoothly," said Clement Chartier, former president of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples.

The assembly also dedicated its statements to the improvement of democracy in Haiti and also to the promotion of human rights throughout the continent. A resolution was approved for continued efforts toward the immediate restoration of security, and the strengthening of humanitarian aid in Haiti.

Haiti has long suffered serious political and social crises, especially after then President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in 2021. There are around 200 armed gangs in the country disturbing the social order. The rise of armed gangs, the surge of violence incidents and the increase of lynching cases have forced Haitians to live in humanitarian disasters in terms of safety, health care and food supplies.
