Peru hopes to replicate development of Shenzhen in its Chancay Port: ambassador

Peru will replicate the success of China's Shenzhen in the Chancay Port, said Peruvian Ambassador Marco Balarezo in an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Beijing on Monday.

As a landmark project of the Belt and Road Initiative between China and Peru, the Chancay mega port, with an investment of 3 billion U.S. dollars, is projected to be a gateway from South America to Asia.

Recognizing Shenzhen's remarkable transformation from a coastal village, Balarezo stated that Peru aspires to achieve similar economic development, starting from the foundations of the Chancay Port.

"The Chancay Port is the most important in Latin America. Apart from the port of Manzanillo in Mexico, there are no others in Latin America capable of accomodating the most advanced ships. The Chancay port will cut the journey time between China's Shanghai and Latin America by 10 days, from 23 or 25 days to 13 to 15 days. Peru is located right in the middle of South America. If you look at the map, it is right in the middle. Therefore, the country can easily become a hub and a focal point for development. It will not only serve as a maritime hub, but also a trade and logistics center. We plan to develop a comprehensive complex of logistics, technology, and industry at this port. Therefore, part of the purpose of the Peruvian president's visit is to engage Chinese investors in the development by establishing factories, technology hubs and research centers. The logistics part is important, but the rest is equally or more important," said Balarezo.

"As the Ambassador of Peru to China, I think we want to replicate the success of Shenzhen in Chancay. This is a grand vision that will not only change the relationship between China and Peru but also transform Peru, offering more opportunities for all," he added.

At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, President of the Republic of Peru Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra is paying a state visit to China from Tuesday to Saturday. Shenzhen is the first stop of her journey.

54th OAS General Assembly held in Asuncion, with focus on regional security

The 54th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) was held in Asuncion, Paraguay from Wednesday to Friday, with a focus on integration and security for the sustainable regional development.

Attending the assembly were representatives from OAS member states, 74 permanent observers and some civil society organizations.

Under the theme of "Integration and Security for the Sustainable Development of the Region," the delegations expressed their pleas for peace, democracy, equality and multilateral work among countries.

Hours before the opening ceremony in Asuncion, the situation in Bolivia, a neighboring country to Paraguay, was top on the agenda.

According to the Bolivian government, Gen. Juan Jose Zuniga on Wednesday led the attempted coup in Palacio Quemado, the government palace, which is located in Murillo Square in the city of La Paz, in a failed bid to oust President Luis Arce from office.

"We do have a very deep concern about the indigenous people in Bolivia, and hopefully this coup d'etat that didn't happen, that things go smoothly," said Clement Chartier, former president of the World Council of Indigenous Peoples.

The assembly also dedicated its statements to the improvement of democracy in Haiti and also to the promotion of human rights throughout the continent. A resolution was approved for continued efforts toward the immediate restoration of security, and the strengthening of humanitarian aid in Haiti.

Haiti has long suffered serious political and social crises, especially after then President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in 2021. There are around 200 armed gangs in the country disturbing the social order. The rise of armed gangs, the surge of violence incidents and the increase of lynching cases have forced Haitians to live in humanitarian disasters in terms of safety, health care and food supplies.
