China's initiative to enhance international cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) received unanimous support at the United Nations General Assembly, marking a significant milestone in global efforts to foster AI capacity-building, according to a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.
Mao briefed reporters at a regular press briefing about the resolution passed during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly on July 1.
"On July 1, the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the China-proposed resolution to enhance international cooperation on capacity-building of artificial intelligence, co-sponsored by over 140 countries. This reflects a broad consensus among nations to strengthen AI capacity building, and underscores their political resolve to bridge digital divides through unity and cooperation," Mao stated.
"The resolution advocates for human-centered AI development, promoting benevolent applications to benefit humanity. It prioritizes capacity building, emphasizing increased representation and voice for developing countries in global AI governance. The resolution also calls for a fair, non-discriminatory business environment and supports the UN's pivotal role, urging practical international cooperation to assist developing countries in AI capacity building for sustainable development," Mao emphasized.
"As the proposer of the resolution, China upheld the principles of transparency, openness, and inclusiveness during negotiations, incorporating reasonable suggestions to bridge differences and earning full affirmation from member states. The adoption of the resolution highlights the international community's strong commitment to capacity building, especially in developing countries, and their significant interest in global AI governance," Mao added.
"China deeply appreciates the robust support from all member states for the resolution and their substantial contributions to its adoption. China is prepared to capitalize on this momentum to strengthen cooperation with the international community, facilitate the resolution's implementation, accelerate related capacities in partner countries within the UN framework, and contribute to achieving the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, fostering a shared future for humanity," the spokeswoman concluded.
