NATO should reflect on the root causes of the Ukraine crisis and on what it has done for peace in Europe and the rest of the world, rather than shirk responsibilities and shift contradictions to others, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said on Tuesday, when commenting on NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's recent remarks on China's role in the Ukraine crisis.
Stoltenberg recently said that NATO believes that China's behavior challenges NATO's values, interests and security. He said that Russia imports advanced technology from China to produce missiles and drones, and that China is fueling the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II.
"We don't know what NATO's values are. If its purpose is to instigate conflicts, provoke confrontations, and escalate tensions based on ideological differences, then China cannot agree with it. In fact, it is NATO that consistently challenges China, interferes in China’s internal affairs, distorts and smears China’s domestic and foreign policies, and poses a serious threat to China’s interests and security," said Mao Ning, the spokeswoman, at a press conference in Beijing.
"On the Ukraine crisis, China has always been committed to promoting peace talks and working for a political settlement. NATO should reflect on the root causes of the crisis and on what it has done for peace in Europe and the rest of the world, instead of shirking responsibility and shifting contradictions to others," said the spokeswoman.
