Over 30 large language models unveiled at WAIC 2024

More than 30 large language models created by both Chinese and international developers have been unveiled at the ongoing 2024 World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, showcasing a host of new application scenarios, from restoring ancient texts to delivering essential information to users.

The three-day WAIC, which opened Thursday, is focused on the theme "Governing AI for Good and for All", and has attracting government officials and representatives of international organizations, industries, universities and research institutes, among others.

The event is displaying the latest AI applications in a range of key areas such as large language models, algorithms, robotics and autonomous driving vehicles.

At one of the many exhibition booths, a large language model which can restore the missing text of ancient books with artificial intelligence algorithms is taking center stage.

The model can offer this unique form of restoration after scanning the pages of the text with high-definition filters, and learning the writing style, paper background and positioning of the incomplete or worn ancient books.

The technology has already been used to good effect in restoring texts which were discovered in the Mogao Caves of northwest China's Dunhuang and date back hundreds of centuries.

"At present, we have opened the text restoration experience of Dunhuang manuscripts, and in the future, we will put more ancient books into the model, so that the cultural heritage can take on a new look with the help of this technology. We also hope to cooperate with more professional literature research institutions and experts in the industry, so that the model can learn more ancient books with different styles and characteristics spanning different periods. As a result, ancient books can be restored on a much larger scale," said Cao Chaoyang, an exhibitor.

In addition to reading documents fast, organizing data and assisting creation, this intelligent application can also carry out multiple rounds of directed searches, more accurately understanding users' search needs and demands, and helping clarify their requirements by raising a series of questions, thus giving more accurate answers.

"All enterprises and developers can use the large language model's capability in the developer center. The large language model has transformed AI from a tool into a partner. I believe it will become more and more powerful, and can create more and more value," said Xu Shunli, another exhibitor.

Data shows that as of the end of April, more than 300 large language models had been launched in China, while the number of models with more than 1 billion parameters had exceeded 100, covering the fields of electronic information, medical care, transportation, and many others.

CMG broadcast vehicles for Paris Olympics unloaded at Port of Rotterdam

A new batch of China Media Group's (CMG) 8K ultra-high-definition (UHD) live broadcast vehicles for the Paris Olympics was unloaded in the Netherlands on Sunday local time, before heading to France.

In addition to the broadcast van in red, an auxiliary vehicle was also disembarked at the Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe.

With a length of 17 meters, a width of 2.5 meters and a weight of 40 tons, the live broadcast vehicle, carrying state-of-the-art broadcast equipment, has very high requirements on the port's lifting capacity.

To ensure smooth unloading, the Port of Rotterdam convened a pre-ship meeting and specifically designed a customized lifting plan. Prior to the actual lift, over two hours were spent testing and adjusting the lifting equipment.

As planned, the broadcast vehicles will run all the way from Rotterdam to Belgium, and sail to Paris. As a leading broadcaster and the international media organization with the most broadcasting rights for the Paris Olympic Games, CMG is set to orchestrate its largest-scale Olympic Games coverage to date.

A production and technical service team of over 2,000 technicians will be responsible for producing pool signals for the four major events: gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, and rock climbing.

Meanwhile, the live broadcast will last over 400 hours, with more than 11,000 hours of high-quality signals for the competitions broadcast and distributed through television channels and new media terminals.

For the first time abroad, CMG's Olympic broadcast production will be delivered entirely in 4K ultra-high-definition.
