Emsd detects legionella in cooling tower water sample, issues nuisance notice in yuen long - latest statistics revealed on department's website
The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (July 8) announced that the department tested 58 water samples collected from cooling towers in 35 buildings in its routine inspections in June 2024. One sample was detected to have a total legionella count at or above the upper threshold, which is 1000 colony-forming units per millilitre. The latest statistics are set out in Annex 1.
The cooling tower in which the one sample was collected is located at 39-47 Wang Lok Street, Yuen Long. The EMSD has issued nuisance notice under the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance to the owner of the cooling tower requiring appropriate disinfection work to be done. Disinfection of the cooling tower in this case has already been completed by the owner. Details of the case can be found in Annex 2.

The EMSD reminds the owners of fresh water cooling towers that they have the responsibility to design, operate and maintain cooling towers properly. They should arrange regular inspections, timely maintenance and periodic testing of the water quality in their cooling towers in accordance with the Code of Practice for Fresh Water Cooling Towers issued by the department to prevent the proliferation of legionella.

HAD opens temporary heat shelters
The Home Affairs Department is opening 19 community halls/community centres as temporary heat shelters today (October 6).
The temporary heat shelters will remain open for people to take refuge from the heat when the Very Hot Weather Warning is in force. From 10.30pm to 8am the next day, the temporary heat shelters will also provide bedding and a sleeping place for people in need. The shelters are manned by duty attendants.
