Nguyen Phu Trong, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, passed away at the age of 80, the health authority of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee announced on Friday.
The committee said Trong died at 13:38 local time at the Central Military Hospital 108 in Hanoi.
Trong became party chief of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2011 and also served as Vietnam's president from October 2018 to April 2021.

The China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Internet Development and Cooperation Forum opened in Xi'an City, the capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Thursday.
The two-day event features sub-forums on the digital economy, cybersecurity, and AI governance, as well as a cybersecurity workshop with regional stakeholders.
The forum, themed "sharing new opportunities of digital development and building a China-LAC community of shared future in cyberspace," brings together Chinese and LAC countries' government officials, diplomats, tech leaders and experts to explore digital opportunities.
The forum is jointly organized by the Cyberspace Administration of China and the People's Government of Shaanxi Province.
The forum aims to deepen exchanges and cooperation between China and LAC countries in the internet sector, promote the collaborative development of the digital economy, and create an international platform for internet technology and industry cooperation.
