China-South Asia Expo opens, boosting regional cooperation

      2024-07-23 21:35 Last Updated At:22:07

The 8th China-South Asia Expo opened on Tuesday in Kunming, the capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, attracting over 2,000 exhibitors.

Nearly half of the exhibitors are companies from South and Southeast Asia.

The six-day event features 15 exhibition halls with themes including architecture technology, manufacturing, green energy and modern agriculture.

Notably, for the first time, a pavilion dedicated to the coffee industry has been established, highlighting Yunnan's status as China's premier coffee producer. Over 160 companies are showcasing their products in this pavilion.

"At this international stage of the China-South Asia Expo, we actively learn from and engage in deep exchanges with enterprises, peers, and travel agencies worldwide, which helps us better promote local cultural and tourism resources," said Wen Junmei, deputy director of Yunnan's Zhaotong City Culture and Tourism Bureau.

"This is a very large expo in China. When I participated in this expo, only four booths were [from] Pakistan. But now many people come over (here). We like the Kunming expo, because when I started the business, I started in Kunming," said a Pakistani exhibitor named Salim Shahzad.

"The most prominent feature and highlight of the China-South Asia Expo is its focus on South Asia. Exhibits cover all South Asian countries, showcasing their unique and advantageous products, as well as complementary goods for China. Essentially, visitors can explore the entirety of South Asia in one expo. We aim to make the China-South Asia Expo a comprehensive platform for policy exchange, product trade, cultural exchange, and trade investment cooperation between China and South Asian countries, thereby deepening economic and trade cooperation," said Duan Tao, deputy director of general coordination department under the executive committee of the expo.

The expo was first held in Kunming in 2013, the same year China put forward the Belt and Road Initiative. Since its inception, the expo has served more than 18,000 domestic and foreign companies, promoted trade with a volume of more than 100 billion U.S. dollars, and facilitated the signing of agreements on over 3,000 projects.

Jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce and the Yunnan provincial government, the expo is one of the year's most important events for economic and trade exchanges between China and South Asian countries.

Official data shows that trade volume between China and South Asian countries reached nearly 200 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, doubling the amount in 2013.
