A powerful storm has lashed China's Taiwan region as Typhoon Gaemi made landfall in the eastern part of Yilan County around midnight Thursday, leaving homes and farmlands inundated with floodwaters and mud.
The mountainous area in Yuanshan Township, Yilan received more than 900mm of precipitation in the early hours of Thursday. Torrential rains swelled rivers, triggering flash flooding that soaked crops and damaged buildings. One villager told China Central Television that his home was flooded in waist-deep deluge.
With the floodwaters gradually receding, roads were left covered in a thick layer of sludge. Households have started the clean-up and restoration work.
Gaemi, the first typhoon of the season, has caused high winds and heavy rain across Southeast Asia, leaving at least 21 dead in the Philippines and two dead and over 200 injured in China's Taiwan as of Thursday morning.
It's expected to make landfall along the East China Sea coast from Lianjiang to Xiuyu in Fujian Province opposite the Taiwan Island across the Taiwan Strait between Thursday afternoon and evening, and then it is projected to continue to move further inland to the north. Fujian Province had evacuated 156,800 residents as of 07:00 Thursday.
