LONDON (AP) — A British police officer was suspended from duties Thursday after a video posted on social media appeared to show him kicking and stomping on the head of a man lying on the floor at Manchester Airport.

Greater Manchester Police said the incident occurred while police were called to break up a fight at the airport’s Terminal Two on Tuesday. Three officers were assaulted, with one suffering a broken nose. All three needed hospital treatment. Four people were arrested.

“We understand the deep concerns that have been widely raised with us, and will continue to meet and discuss these feelings with Greater Manchester residents and elected representatives, whilst this independent investigation takes place,” police said in a statement.

The incident came amid rising distrust of police in Britain following allegations of excessive force used against ethnic minorities and scandals involving two serving police officers who were arrested for rape and murder. An independent investigation commissioned by the government recently found that London’s Metropolitan Police Service was institutionally racist, homophobic and misogynistic.

Even so, a lawyer representing two of the men involved in the Manchester airport altercation said the people who were allegedly assaulted are family members of a serving police officer. Akhmed Yakoob told the BBC the incident was an example of “police brutality,'' and that the family was traumatized.

“This man is now afraid to go to work,'' he said. “He went in today and spoke to his supervisor, and the only reason he is not going to work (is) because he is fearing for his own safety and he thinks, like his family members were the victims, he could be a victim.''

The Manchester officer involved in the video was suspended after crowds gathered outside a police station to protest police violence. Police said the demonstration concluded “without incident.’’

Asked about the video, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: "I’ve seen it myself. I understand that concern.”

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham appealed for calm and met with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, who is responsible for law and order issues in the U.K.

Burnham told the BBC there were “issues for both sides in the situation,” but added, "That said, here’s where I want to be really clear: It is right that the officer has been suspended.''

This story corrects that the incident occurred on Tuesday, not Wednesday.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela's government has revoked permission for Brazil to serve as custodian of Argentina's diplomatic missions in the country, alleging several anti-government opponents holed up for months in the Argentine ambassador's residence had been plotting terrorist acts from the compound.

In a statement Saturday, Venezuela's foreign ministry said it had notified Brazil of its decision, which will take effect immediately. It said it was forced to take action based on what it called evidence — which it hasn't shared — that those who sought refuge in Argentina's diplomatic mission were plotting.

Magalli Meda, the former campaign chief of opposition leader María Corina Machado, was among a half dozen government opponents who fled to the Argentina ambassador’s residence after Maduro’s chief prosecutor in March issued an order for her arrest for allegedly propagating destabilizing, political violence.

In retaliation, Maduro broke off diplomatic relations with Argentine President Javier Milei’s right-wing government, which tapped neighbor Brazil to represent its interests and safeguard the asylum seekers.

There was no immediate response from Argentina or Brazil.

Since Friday, armored vehicles from the SEBIN political police have been parked outside the Argentina ambassador’s residence in a leafy Caracas neighborhood. Electricity to the diplomatic mission was also cut, according to Meda, who has taken to social media to denounce what she fears is an impending raid to arrest her and the other government opponents.
