Chinese President Xi Jinping said Friday that China and Britain should remain firm as partners, strengthen dialogue and cooperation, and benefit the two countries and the world through a stable and mutually beneficial China-Britain relationship.
Xi made the remarks during his phone talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
He said that in a world marked by change and disorder, China and Britain, both permanent members of the UN Security Council and major economies in the world, should view bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective.
Xi said China is committed to building a great country and advancing national rejuvenation on all fronts through Chinese modernization, and China is committed to the path of peaceful development. It is hoped that Britain can view China in an objective and rational light, said Xi.
The third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China made strategic plans for further comprehensively deepening reform and promoting Chinese modernization, said Xi, noting that China will accelerate the development of new quality productive forces and promote new type of industrialization, which will provide more new opportunities for other countries in the world including Britain.
China stands ready to engage in equal dialogue with Britain on the basis of mutual respect, enhance mutual understanding and mutual trust, and make mutual benefit and win-win outcomes the main theme of China-Britain relations, said Xi.
China is also ready to strengthen the alignment of development strategies with Britain, expand cooperation in such fields as finance, green economy and artificial intelligence, as well as deepen people-to-people exchanges, said Xi.
For his part, Starmer congratulated China's Olympic delegation for Paris 2024 on its excellent results at the Olympic Games.
Noting that closer cooperation between Britain and China is in the long-term interests of both sides, Starmer said stronger cooperation between the two countries in economy, trade, finance, education, clean energy, medicine and health will help boost development for both countries and jointly address global challenges including climate change.
Starmer said that Britain hopes to strengthen contact and dialogue with China at all levels and in all sectors, and push for positive results in bilateral practical cooperation and institutional exchanges, fostering a long-term, stable, and strategic relationship with China based on mutual respect.
The British side is willing to maintain communication with China on major international and regional issues and contribute to safeguarding world security and stability, said Starmer, reiterating that the British government's long-standing adherence to the one-China policy remains unchanged. Xi pointed out that the Chinese side attaches great importance to the British side's desire to enhance contact and dialogue, and China is willing to maintain exchanges at all levels with the British side and push for stable and far-reaching bilateral relations.
