A mix of unexpected animated hits and movies using cutting-edge technologies have been drawing audiences into theaters since the beginning of the summer movie season, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience for moviegoers.
According to real-time data from online platforms, China's box office revenue for this summer movie season which began on June 1, including pre-sales, had surpassed 11 billion yuan (about 1.54 billion U.S. dollars) by late Saturday night.
The animated film "White Snake: Afloat," adapted from the classic Chinese tale of the White Snake, has taken center stage with its timeless love story between Xiao Bai and Ah Xuan, two souls bound together across lifetimes.
While the narrative is recognizable, it is the film's breathtaking animated portrayal of ancient China that is captivating audiences.
Set in Lin'an, the former capital of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), the film brings the past to life with stunning detail -- bustling streets, winding alleys, lively restaurants, teahouses, and busy docks are all vividly portrayed.
In recent years, animated films inspired by China's rich cultural heritage have surged in popularity.
"By introducing more perspectives and interpretive approaches that align with current developments in humanities and society, these movies aim to enhance the general public's acceptance of the spiritual essence and visual representation of traditional culture within modern contexts," said Sun Chengjian, deputy director with the Film and Television Research Institute at the China National Academy of Arts.
