The China International Big Data Industry Expo 2024 concluded on Friday with overseas attendees calling for more global cooperation in data sharing, underscoring that their growing partnerships with the Chinese industry can play a role.

The gathering took place from August 28 to 30 in Guiyang, south China's Guizhou Province, with professional exhibitions and industry exchanges centered on the theme "Smart Digital Technology Shapes Thriving Digital Economy."

This year's expo attracted 77 foreign companies from 31 countries, including the U.S., France, Canada, and Russia, with around 140 international guests from major companies like Apple and Intel, as well as international organizations attending the conferences.

According to representatives from several data-focused software organizations based in Germany, the event offered an opportunity to expand their already robust partnerships with Chinese companies in the big data sector.

"The data economy and also data innovation is growing really fast also in China. So we now celebrate the tenth anniversary of this Big Data Expo," said Julia Pampus, research group leader for the department of dataspace technologies at the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering in Dortmund, Germany.

"In general, the digital economy in China is well advanced, I would say from my estimation under the leading nations in the world. And we are collaborating already with a couple of Chinese industries and organizations and we want to deepen and align this here during the Big Data Expo," said Thorsten Huelsmann, CEO of Digital Hub Management GmbH, a non-profit that promotes the city of Dortmund as a center for innovation.

Going forward, participants said they hope to see the establishment of new mechanisms for data sharing and efforts to see more elements of big data realize their full value.

"We need to incorporate standards, infrastructure and data technologies for data sharing, especially in this dataspace context," Pampus said.

"My expectation is that we have great exchange and start in international collaboration on the principles of data sharing. And we have to work closely together, not all about to have a standardization of data, and really unlock the value of data," said Sven Loffler, head of dataspaces and data products for Telekom Data Intelligence Hub, a dataspace and data sharing service company based in Frankfurt, Germany.

China's first tire factory in Europe officially started mass production in Zrenjanin, Serbia, on Friday.

More than 300 people, including Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Serbian government officials and Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Li Ming, attended the inauguration ceremony.

Vucic said that China has always been an important partner of Serbia, and this largest greenfield investment project in Serbia so far will promote regional development and become a strong witness of cooperation between the two countries.

"No matter how the international situation changes, China will remain a reliable partner for all countries seeking common development. [China] not only considers its own interests, but also thinks about its partners, and works for our wellbeing and achievements," said Vucic.

The total investment of the project is 990 million U.S. dollars, with 97 hectares of planned land area, about 500,000 square meters of the total construction area. The planned production capacity is 12 million passenger car tires, 1.6 million commercial vehicle tires and 220,000 off-highway tires.

Vucic highlighted the economic benefits the factory will bring to Zrenjanin and the surrounding region, with a projected boost to the city's budget, which will fund new infrastructure projects. It is expected that the factory will achieve export value of 200 million euros this year, and may increase to 500 million euros next year.
