Yemen's Houthis release video showing attack against Greek-flagged oil tanker

Yemen's Houthis on Thursday released a video showing that its armed personnel boarded Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion and detonated explosives on the vessel.

The video included a series of explosions and burning on the deck of the vessel, following the boarding of Houthis' armed personnel and their installation of explosives at multiple parts of the vessel.

The Houthis also released another video of explosions on the vessel on Aug 23.

The Greek-flagged Sounion oil tanker was attacked by the Houthis in the Red Sea west of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah on Aug 21, with its hull being severely damaged.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree on Aug 22 claimed responsibility for the attacks against the vessel, saying that it belongs to a company related to Israel.

The EU said the vessel carries 150,000 tonnes of crude oil, which could cause environmental pollution after the attack.

The Houthis said late Wednesday that the group has agreed to permit the rescue operation and towing of the oil tanker, which has been burning in the Red Sea for nearly a week.

The attacks are part of a series of assaults by Houthi forces on ships in the Red Sea. The group claims these actions are "in solidarity with Palestinians" amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

In response to the Houthi maritime attacks, the U.S.-led naval coalition operating in the region has stepped up strikes against Houthi military sites. Since Jan 12 this year, the U.S. and the UK have launched several air strikes on Houthi targets, causing casualties. However, this has only served to further escalate the tit-for-tat exchanges, with the Houthis vowing to continue targeting vessels they claim are linked to Israel.

China's first tire factory in Europe begins mass production in Serbia

2024-09-14 19:09 Last Updated At:19:37

China's first tire factory in Europe officially started mass production in Zrenjanin, Serbia, on Friday.

More than 300 people, including Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Serbian government officials and Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Li Ming, attended the inauguration ceremony.

Vucic said that China has always been an important partner of Serbia, and this largest greenfield investment project in Serbia so far will promote regional development and become a strong witness of cooperation between the two countries.

"No matter how the international situation changes, China will remain a reliable partner for all countries seeking common development. [China] not only considers its own interests, but also thinks about its partners, and works for our wellbeing and achievements," said Vucic.

The total investment of the project is 990 million U.S. dollars, with 97 hectares of planned land area, about 500,000 square meters of the total construction area. The planned production capacity is 12 million passenger car tires, 1.6 million commercial vehicle tires and 220,000 off-highway tires.

Vucic highlighted the economic benefits the factory will bring to Zrenjanin and the surrounding region, with a projected boost to the city's budget, which will fund new infrastructure projects. It is expected that the factory will achieve export value of 200 million euros this year, and may increase to 500 million euros next year.
