A Chinese envoy to the United Nations called on all related parties to end Ukraine crisis through peaceful efforts at a UN Security Council meeting held on Friday over the issue of arms imports into Ukraine at the request of Russia.
Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to UN, stated at the meeting that sending weapons to the battlefield will not bring lasting peace, and all parties concerned should prioritize peace and humanity and devote resources and energy to diplomatic efforts to ceasefire and an end to hostilities.
Geng pointed out that the current focus is to abide by the three principles of no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no fanning by any party over the flames to cool down the situation as soon as possible.
Geng said parties to the conflict need to demonstrate political resolve, align their objectives, and stop the fighting as soon as possible to start peace talks. Conversely, bolstering bloc confrontations will only further aggravate the crisis and make the road to peace more tortuous.
Geng said that China is neither the creator nor a party to the Ukrainian crisis, and has not provided weapons to any party to the conflict and has always strictly controlled dual-use items.
Chinese companies have carried out normal economic and trade cooperation with countries around the world, including Russia and Ukraine, in accordance with WTO rules and market principles, which is reasonable, legal, and beyond reproach, Geng said.
The United States should make concerted efforts with relevant countries, including China, instead of shifting the blame and creating confrontation if it truly wants to end the war, said Geng.
"In fact, the United States has all along maintained economic and trade exchanges with Russia. The pressing need of the international community is to promote a ceasefire and stop the war to achieve peace. For this purpose, China has made a clarion call and ceaseless mediation. The United States not only turned a blind eye to China's efforts to promote peace talks, but also repeatedly spread lies in the Security Council and slandered China on the Ukraine issue. China firmly opposes this and will never accept it," he said.
