Local authorities in China's southern regions have taken various precautions to gear up for the approaching Typhoon Yagi.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters raised its emergency response for flood and typhoon prevention from level III to level II in Guangdong and Hainan provinces at 15:00 on Thursday, as Typhoon Yagi approaches.
The eye of Yagi, the 11th typhoon of the year, was located on the sea approximately 540 km southeast of Xuwen County, Guangdong Province, at 14:00 on Thursday.
Yagi is expected to make landfall on Friday afternoon or evening somewhere between the city of Qionghai in Hainan and Maoming City in Guangdong.
Affected by Yagi, parts of Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan will be pounded by rainstorms in the next three days.
China has a four-tier flood-control emergency-response system, with Level I being the most severe response. Haikou, capital of Hainan, began suspension of work, schools, public transportation and other services starting from Thursday noon. Multiple scenic spots across Hainan have been temporarily closed.
All inbound and outbound flights at Haikou Meilan International Airport are canceled from 20:00 Thursday to Friday midnight.

Additionally, taxi, bus and other passenger transport services in Haikou will temporarily cease operations from 22:00 Thursday.
The maritime police in Hainan has initiated a series of emergency plans, guiding vessels in implementing all necessary precautions in response to the typhoon.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government is fully prepared to respond to Typhoon Yagi, as the Hong Kong Observatory said on Thursday that it would issue gale or storm signal No. 8 at around 18:20 local time.
The Education Bureau of the HKSAR government has announced the suspension of classes for all primary and secondary schools on Thursday and Friday.
