Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez attended the inauguration of the Cervantes Institute, a center that promotes Spanish language and culture, in Shanghai on Tuesday.

The institute is the second of its kind established in China.

Sanchez, along with other participants, watched a lively lion and dragon dance performance at the inauguration ceremony, which the Spanish leader said he enjoyed "very much".

He expressed congratulations on the establishment of the center.

Sanchez is paying an official visit to China from Sept. 8 to 11 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang. This is his second trip to the country in a year and a half.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li and top legislator Zhao Leji met with Sanchez respectively on Monday to discuss bilateral cooperation and other issues of common concern.

Before traveling to Shanghai, the Spanish PM also attended a business meeting for Chinese and Spanish companies in Beijing on Monday.

China is willing to work with the new administration of the United States to promote bilateral relations from a new starting point, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has told advisers he wants to travel to China after he takes office, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday. Trump has expressed interest in making the trip to China in his first 100 days in office, but no decision has yet been made on this, said the report, citing the sources.

Trump is set to be sworn in for a second term on Monday. He visited Beijing in 2017, less than one year into his first four-year term.

"China stands ready to work with the new U.S. administration, under the strategic guidance of the presidents of the two countries and in the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, to maintain communication, enhance cooperation, properly manage and control differences and secure greater progress in China-U.S. relations from a new starting point," said Mao.
