The international community should guard against the spillover and escalation of the Ukraine crisis, so as to cool down the situation as soon as possible, a Chinese envoy said on Tuesday at a U.N. Security Council meeting on the Ukraine issue.
China's Deputy Permanent Representative Geng Shuang noted at the meeting that the priority is to deescalate the tension by observing the three principles of no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no fanning by any party over the flames.
Geng stated that the conflict in Ukraine continues to drag on, with a worsening humanitarian situation and ongoing risks of spillover effects. The prolonged conflict has brought immense suffering to civilians on both sides, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis.
He called on the parties involved in the conflict to remain calm and restrained, to adhere to international law, especially the laws of war, to avoid attacks on civilians and civilian facilities, and to refrain from attacking peaceful nuclear facilities such as nuclear power plants.
He also emphasized that China's position on the issue has been very clear and consistent, which is to promote peace talks and seek a political resolution. All efforts that are conducive to a peaceful resolution of the crisis should be supported.
"The war, if it continues, will only lead to more harm and damage and exacerbate instability in international and regional situations. An early ceasefire and a turn to political solutions are in the best interests of all parties. The more complex the situation is, the more we must not give up on the hope for peace. The international community should maintain an objective and fair position, sends out a positive and constructive voice, and call for an early ceasefire and resumption of peace talks," he said.
