China expected the Europe Union (EU) to heed objective and rational views and promote healthy and stable economic and trade ties, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday that the country is reconsidering its position on EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EV) and called on the European Commission and all member states reconsider proposed import tariffs on Chinese-made EV, as he wrapped up his four-day visit to China, which ended on Sept 11.
He also stressed that trade wars should be avoided between China and the EU and a compromise needs to be reached.
When asked to respond to Sanchez's statements, Mao said that China appreciates his objective understanding.
"Prime Minister Sanchez's statements reflects his rational and objective thinking, and China appreciates the remarks. The development of the EV industry aligns with the common interests of China and Europe. By working together to address challenges, businesses and consumers on the both sides will benefit, which contributes to the global shift towards sustainability. China is actively seeking mutually agreeable solutions with the utmost sincerity that comply with the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO). We hope the EU will heed rational and objective opinions, fully understand complementary advantages and cooperation potential between China and Europe in the EV sector, demonstrate flexibility and sincerity, move in the same direction with China, and handle economic and trade frictions properly through dialogue and consultation, thereby promoting the healthy and steady development of China-EU economic and trade relations," she stated.
