A Chinese mainland spokesman on Wednesday solemnly warned Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities of the consequences of advancing separatist activities.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Zhu Fenglian, the spokeswoman, slammed the recent separatist statement of an official of the DPP authorities.
In the statement made earlier this month, Chiu Chui-cheng, chief of the region's "mainland affairs council" said Taiwan would never surrender in the face of intensifying pressure from a "more aggressive" mainland.
"The people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait can see clearly who is trying to split the country and who is striving for national rejuvenation; who is carrying out 'pro-independence' provocations and who is promoting cross-Strait peace; who is willing to be a 'pawn' of external forces and who is improving the well-being of compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait," Zhu said in commenting on the statement.
"Solving the Taiwan question and realizing China's complete reunification is a common aspiration of all Chinese people and is an inevitable requirement for realizing great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. We will adhere to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, resolutely oppose 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities and external interference, keep promoting cross-Strait economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation, deepen cross-Strait integration and development in various fields, and firmly promote the great cause of national reunification. We have a clear message to the DPP authorities that reunification is a general trend and separatist activities shall only fail. 'Taiwan independence' is a dead end, and evildoers are bound to be punished in the end," Zhu said.
