Browns LT Jedrick Wills Jr. out against Raiders as Cleveland's O-line injuries and issues mount

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns will be without starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. on Sunday against Las Vegas after he injured his right knee last week while making his season debut following surgery in December.

Wills will sit out along with tackle Jack Conklin and tight end David Njoku, who were all ruled out Friday before practice by coach Kevin Stefanski. Running back Pierre Strong Jr. (hamstring) will also miss the game.

With Wills out, Stefanski will again be forced to play at least one backup and maybe more. It was a similar situation last week, when the Browns (1-2) lost three offensive linemen to injuries in a 21-15 loss to the New York Giants.

Cleveland's had major protection problems up front as Deshaun Watson was sacked eight times last week and has been dropped a league-high 16 times in three games.

A first-round pick in 2020, Wills finally got back on the field following knee surgery and rehab only to hurt the same knee when he got rolled up on by a New York defensive player in the third quarter.

Wills didn't practice this week but had expressed optimism he could play. James Hudson III, who hurt his shoulder against the Giants, will likely take his spot against the Raiders.

Hudson had taken over at right tackle last week when Dawand Jones, who has been dealing with knee issues, was ineffective and benched at halftime.

Conklin was on the cusp of playing right or left tackle last week, but the two-time All-Pro suffered a hamstring injury in practice. He hasn't played since hurting his knee in last year's opener and undergoing reconstructive surgery.

If all that wasn't enough, the Browns placed right guard Wyatt Teller on injured reserve earlier this week. Teller sprained a knee ligament against New York and will miss at least four games.

Stefanski wanted to get through Friday's practice before committing to his starters on the line.

“I know we have options,” he said. "There’s things that we can do based on who’s available.”

As the injuries piled up last week, left guard Joel Bitonio moved to tackle, center Ethan Pocic slid to left guard, Nick Harris played center and rookie Zak Zinter replaced Teller. Zinter is expected to make his first NFL start Sunday.

Njoku sprained his ankle in the opener and missed the past two games, depriving Watson of one of his top playmakers. He returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday but isn’t ready to play just yet.

The Latest: Trump meets with Zelenskyy and Harris heads to US-Mexico border

2024-09-28 00:44 Last Updated At:00:50

Vice President Kamala Harris was making her first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump met in New York with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Harris was scheduled to appear in Douglas, Arizona, as Trump and his fellow Republicans pound her relentlessly over the Biden administration’s record on migration.

Zelenskyy's visit with Trump came as public tensions have been rising between the two over Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion.

Here’s the latest:

The Justice Department has announced criminal charges against Iranian operatives suspected of hacking Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and disseminating stolen information to media organizations.

The indictment comes at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran as Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel escalate attacks against each other, raising concerns about the prospect of an all-out war, and as U.S. officials say they continue to track physical threats by Iran against a number of officials including Trump.

The Trump campaign disclosed on Aug. 10 that it had been hacked and said Iranian actors had stolen and distributed sensitive internal documents.

Democrats looking to stay in the Senate majority are going on the offense in two U.S. Senate races in the Republican-leaning states of Texas and Florida.

Sen. Gary Peters, chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, says the group is making a “multi-million dollar investment” in television advertising in the two states and that he’s “very confident there’s going to be more coming.”

Republicans are portraying the investments as a sign that Democrats are worried that incumbent Sen. Jon Tester is in trouble in his bid to win reelection in Montana.

Former President Donald Trump recently reissued his loyalty test to religious Americans, declaring that he can best protect their freedoms while preemptively blaming some if he loses the presidential election in November.

He said Jews and Catholics can vote for him and ace the test, but those who don’t — in his words — “need their head examined.” If he’s defeated, Trump added, Jewish people would bear blame for that result.

Among the Jewish leaders appalled at Trump’s remarks was Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Union for Reform Judaism. Jacobs said: “It puts a target on American Jews. ... Stop.”
