Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York on Friday.
Wang said that China is willing to strengthen cooperation with the UN to advance the cause of world peace and development, make the Pact for the Future a reality, and create a better future for mankind.
As the international situation becomes more complex and global risks and challenges become more prominent, it is all the more important to uphold the authority of the UN and give full play to its role, Wang said.
The concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and three global initiatives that were proposed by President Xi Jinping is to uphold the UN-centered international order and the basic norms governing international relations with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter as the basis, said Wang.
Wang also said that China will fully support the UN's work, support the reform to the international financial architecture, support the UN to play the role as the main channel for global AI governance, and support the UN in actively promoting the political settlement to the Ukraine crisis and the conflict in Gaza, so as to better maintain international peace and security.
Guterres thanked China for its long-standing support to the UN, especially the contribution to the success of the Summit of the Future.
Noting that reaching the Pact for the Future is not easy, and impressive, Guterres hoped that all parties will translate their commitments into actions and work together for its implementation.
At present, globalization faces the risk of fragmentation, and all parties need to jointly oppose protectionism, said Guterres.
In the face of risks and challenges facing the world, the UN will do its best for peace and fulfill its responsibilities for development, said Guterres, adding that China is expected and believed to continue to play an important role.
On the same day, Wang also met with foreign ministers of Cuba, Egypt, and Peru, had a collective meeting with foreign ministers of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and attended the third informal meeting of the foreign ministers of China, Russia, Pakistan and Iran on the Afghan issue.
