National Day holiday box office exceeds 2 bln yuan

The 2024 National Day box office, including previews and presales, exceeded two billion yuan (around 285 million U.S. dollars) as of 12:22 on Monday, the last day of the seven-day holiday, according to online data.

The films scheduled for release during the holiday encompass a diverse range of genres, including sci-fi, drama, action and animation, effectively catering to a wide array of audience preferences.

The top-grossing film is The Volunteers: The Battle of Life and Death, the latest production directed by Chen Kaige, with earnings surpassing 761 million yuan (108 million U.S. dollars) as of 12:22 Monday.

Adventure film The 749 Bureau came in second with nearly 351 million yuan (50 million U.S. dollars), followed by the crime drama Tiger Wolf Rabbit that garnered 340 million yuan (48 million U.S. dollars).

Other films such as Jackie Chan's action-comedy Panda Plan and action-crime High Forces have also attained commendable box office performance.

Return traveler flows for China's National Day holiday peaked on Monday, the last day of the "golden week," with railway system, civil aviation and the highway network making every effort to ensure passengers a smooth return journey.

The national railway system is expected to handle an estimated 19.86 million passenger trips, with 1,705 additional trains scheduled. Some popular routes will continue to operate nighttime high-speed trains on Monday and Tuesday to meet travel demands.

Airlines in the country are expected to handle 2.36 million passengers.

The highway network is expecting a traffic volume of 63 million vehicle trips. Regional hub cities have been witnessing major influxes of vehicles after 16:00. Many highways have been closely monitoring real-time traffic to ensure a smooth traffic flow.

Preliminary estimates from the Ministry of Transport show that from Oct 1 to 7, the total cross-regional personnel flow across the country is about 2.008 billion, with an average daily increase of 4.1 percent year on year.
