China calls for enhancing solidarity among Palestinian factions regardless of how the situation evolves, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning in Beijing on Friday.

On Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency jointly confirmed that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed in the Gaza Strip by Israeli soldiers on Wednesday.

At a press conference, Mao urged an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in response to this latest development. "We have noticed relevant reports. China believes the top priority now is to fully and effectively implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions, stop fighting immediately in Gaza, truly protect civilians, ensure access to humanitarian assistance, and avoid further escalation of conflict and confrontation," Mao said.

Mao reaffirmed China's position on the settling of the Palestine question.

"China always supports Palestine's internal reconciliation, and believes this is an important step towards solving the Palestine question on the basis of the two-state solution and realizing peace and stability in the Middle East. No matter how the situation evolves, the Palestinian factions should strengthen solidarity, and the international community should provide firm support. China is willing to keep working with the relevant parties to this end," she said.
