China expands application scenarios of integrated vehicle-road-cloud system for ICVs

China has been expanding the application scenarios of "vehicle-road-cloud" integration for intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) across the country.

The 2024 World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference kicked off in Beijing Thursday, during which a series of activities were staged to promote the coordinated development of intelligent connected vehicles and related fields.

"Vehicle-road-cloud" integration uses next-generation information and communication technologies to integrate physical information about people, vehicles, and roads with the cloud to ensure the safe, energy-saving, comfortable, and efficient operation of ICVs.

The country's integrated vehicle-road-cloud system is currently at a crucial stage transitioning from testing and verification to large-scale application, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said.

The "vehicle-road-cloud" integration concept has a wide range of commercial applications in fields including public transit, smart sanitation, autonomous delivery, and intelligent connected passenger vehicles, according to industry insiders.

In Shanghai's Jiading District, a total of 162 buses have recently been equipped with connected devices on the network that can receive real-time map and traffic light data.

"Compared with traditional buses, it has the ability for ultra-long-distance perception and all-round safety forecast. It enhances both the driving and riding experiences while also improving the resource utilization of public transport and traffic efficiency," said Sun Dong, senior project manager, Shanghai International Automobile City.

In addition, in Suzhou City of east China's Jiangsu Province, the number of applications of low-speed unmanned vehicles has kept increasing, transitioning from "small-scale pilot projects" to "large-scale applications" in China's express delivery sector. These unmanned express delivery vehicles boast a work efficiency that is three to six times higher than manual work, while also reducing transport costs by 50 percent.

The Chinese naval hospital ship Peace Ark, which is on the Mission Harmony-2024, arrived at the port of Cotonou, the Republic of Benin, for a 7-day friendly visit.

This is Peace Ark's first visit to Benin, and also the first time a Chinese naval ship has paid a visit to the country since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Medical teams on the vessel will provide service for local residents during their stay.

Local residents, Chinese citizens in Benin, and representatives of Chinese-invested companies boarded the naval hospital ship for a visit during its public opening.

"We are Chinese working in Benin. The moment we saw the arrival of Peace Ark coming from our homeland, we were excited, and tears filled our eyes because we feel the strength of our country," said Xu Hewei, a Chinese in Benin.

This is the 10th Mission Harmony for "Peace Ark" since its commissioning in 2008.

This mission will be the longest voyage undertaken by the "Peace Ark" among all the Harmony missions, and it is set to visit a record number of 13 countries.
