LeBron and Bronny James make NBA history by playing together in Lakers' 110-103 win over Minnesota

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James and Bronny James became the first father and son to play in the NBA together Tuesday night during the Los Angeles Lakers' 110-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 39-year-old superstar and his 20-year-old son played almost 2 1/2 minutes together late in the first half of Bronny's NBA debut. They are also the first father and son to play in the NBA at the same time, let alone on the same team.

LeBron scored 16 points, while Anthony Davis had 36 points and 16 rebounds in a dominant performance for the Lakers. Rui Hachimura added 18 points.

JJ Redick won his head coaching debut for the Lakers, who hired the 15-year NBA veteran for his first coaching job at any level.

Anthony Edwards scored 27 points for the Timberwolves, who are coming off their best season in 20 years.

Julius Randle had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Donte DiVincenzo had 10 points in their Timberwolves debuts after the trade sending Karl-Anthony Towns to New York three weeks ago.

Dalton Knecht scored five points in the Lakers' first-round pick's debut.

Timberwolves: There will be growing pains in the post-Towns era. Davis ran rampant against Randle and Rudy Gobert, and nobody stepped up to score alongside Edwards.

Lakers: Their largely unchanged roster showed the benefits of continuity, playing disciplined ball on both ends and getting organized defense led by Davis.

Davis was phenomenal down the stretch, either scoring or assisting on 13 of Los Angeles’ next 15 points after he returned to the game with 7:09 left. LeBron's 3-pointer put it away.

LeBron officially joined Vince Carter as the only players in NBA history to play in 22 seasons. James is sixth in career games played with 1,493 — not counting his NBA-record 287 playoff games.

Timberwolves: At Sacramento on Thursday.

Lakers: Host Phoenix on Friday.

Predators beat Bruins 4-0 for 1st victory of season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Juuse Saros made 33 saves and the Nashville Predators ended their season-opening five-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.

Ryan O’Reilly and Luke Evangelista had a goal and an assist each while Tommy Novak and Gustav Nyquist also scored for the Predators, who entered the game as the only team in the NHL without points in the standings.

The shutout was the 25th of Saros’ career.

Jeremy Swayman made 38 saves for Boston.

O’Reilly scored the game’s first goal with 2:44 remaining in the opening period. With the Predators on a power play, Roman Josi fired a slap shot from above the right faceoff circle and O’Reilly tipped it past Swayman on the short side.

Bruins: Following three offseason surgeries, Boston captain Brad Marchand has yet to score a goal this season in seven games.

Predators: After an offseason marked by several high-profile free agent signings meant to bolster a team that hasn’t advanced out of the first round of the playoffs since 2018, Nashville’s revamped roster had not developed any early-season chemistry as evidenced by their 0-5 start.

Just two seconds after a double minor high-sticking penalty to Boston’s Charlie McAvoy expired and Nashville clinging to a 1-0 lead, Novak buried a chance from just outside the crease off of an Evangelista pass to make the game 2-0 before McAvoy could exit the penalty box and rejoin the play.

In his only two previous starts in Nashville, Swayman posted shutouts, stopping all 70 combined shots he’d faced in those games. O’Reilly’s late first-period goal ended Swayman’s Bridgestone Arena shutout streak at 136:34.

The Bruins host the Dallas Stars on Thursday night to start a three-game homestand. The Predators travel to Chicago on Friday to face the Blackhawks.
