Chinese President Xi Jinping's five suggestions made at the just-concluded 16th BRICS Summit opened a new chapter for greater cooperation among the group, said a Brazilian expert on Thursday.

In his speech, Xi put forward five suggestions and stressed that China stands ready to work with other BRICS countries to open a new horizon in the high-quality development for greater BRICS cooperation, and make BRICS' contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

"I read the speech delivered by President Xi Jinping. It was very interesting to see that he mentioned five commitments. BRICS committed to peace, BRICS committed to innovation, BRICS committed to green development, BRICS committed to justice and also BRICS committed to people-to-people exchange. I think this is a very important initiative, because the people of the BRICS countries, they need to know more about this platform," said Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, associate professor at the Law School of the Fluminense Federal University.

He said the BRICS has become a critical platform for promoting multilateralism and multipolarity to achieve mutual goals for development.

"One of the main objectives of BRICS countries is to support multilateralism and to do that it's important to reform the international organization in a way that developing countries can have more voices, can have more opportunities to be part of the decision-making process. And this is the reason why many other countries want to join this initiative. So the BRICS is committed to justice, it's connected or linked to the reform of the international order," said Evandro Menezes de Carvalho.

The BRICS mechanism, as a fruitful and trustful platform, is at a crucial stage of building on past achievements and ushering in a new era, according to Carvalho.

"And now we can see that the BRICS enter in a new chapter of the group focusing on sustainable development, green development, innovation, and this is a very good sign. I mean the point is that developing countries, their concern is economy, their concern is stability, international order that can let them develop themselves and also improve the multilateral relations. And the BRICS is showing that it is a very fruitful and trustful platform," he said.

BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, five major emerging markets with considerable economic potential that founded the BRICS group. It has now evolved into an influential international cooperation mechanism with an expanded membership.
