The Chancay Port brings new vitality and energy to the ancient Inca Trail and helps Peru to thrive with the sea, according to a commentary released by the China Media Group (CMG) on Friday.
An edited English-language version of the commentary is as follows: Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Peruvian counterpart Dina Boluarte attended the opening ceremony of the Chancay Port via video link on Nov. 14. Xi said The Chancay Port is becoming a new starting point of an Inca Trail of the New Era.
"From Chancay to Shanghai, the Belt and Road Initiative is bearing fruit in Peru before our eyes. A new Asia-Latin America land-sea corridor for the new era is taking shape," Xi said. As a flagship project of joint construction by China and Peru under the Belt and Road Initiative, Chancay Port brings new vitality and energy to the ancient Inca Trail and helps Peru to thrive with the sea.
As a "golden" port, the first phase of Chancay Port will shorten the maritime transportation time from Peru to China to 23 days, saving more than 20 percent of logistics costs. It will generate an annual revenue of 4.5 billion U.S. dollars for Peru, and create over 8,000 jobs.
As a green port, the Chancay Port has established an animal rescue station, improved environmental conditions of wetlands, beaches, and biological habitats, and promoted the sustainable development of local economy and society. In the world today, changes on a scale unseen in a century are unfolding at an accelerating pace and the global governance system is experiencing profound changes. China is actively speeding up Chinese modernization and Peru has made a series of development plans to promote energy transition and industrial upgrading. The two countries both hope to address challenges and seek common development, and both uphold multilaterism and oppose protectionism.
From a wider perspective, China and Peru are both important emerging markets among the Pacific Rim and important members of the Global South. It serves the common interests of developing countries to improve the quality of practical cooperation. President Xi pointed out that the two countries need to boost the driving force of the two wheels of trade and investment, advance the development of both traditional and emerging industries, and promote the integration of the industrial and supply chains. President Xi's visit has deepened the traditional friendship between China and Peru, expanded the space for mutually beneficial cooperation, endowed bilateral relations with new contents for the new era, and injected new impetus into China-Latin America cooperation and the development and revitalization of the Global South.
