Xi stresses enhancing inclusive public services for people

President Xi Jinping has urged efforts to enhance inclusive public services for the people.

In a recent instruction on civil affairs work, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized the necessity to strengthen public services to meet the people's essential needs and ensure basic living standards for those facing difficulties.

Lauding the new progress made in all aspects of civil affairs in recent years, Xi urged Party committees and governments at all levels to follow a people-centered approach to resolve the most practical problems that are of the greatest and most direct concern to the people.

He called on civil affairs departments at all levels to promote the implementation of a proactive national strategy in response to population aging, and to improve work in social relief, social welfare, social affairs and social governance.

Xi also emphasized the need for civil affairs departments to take the initiative in enhancing benefits for the people, doing good and practical things for them and helping them overcome difficulties.

Xi's instruction was read out at a national civil affairs conference that was held in Beijing from Friday to Saturday. Premier Li Qiang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, addressed the conference.

Li said efforts should be made to formulate more targeted and effective policies and implement them earnestly, improve mechanisms for policy assessment and optimization, and refine the system for ensuring and improving the people's wellbeing with the spirit of reform and innovation.

Relevant outstanding groups and individuals were commended at the meeting.

The 2024 China Observance of World Cities Day opened on Saturday in Weihai City, in east China's Shandong Province, attracting over 2,000 guests from more than 30 countries and regions.

Themed 'Build People-centered Cities for Better Life,' the three-day event features parallel forums, including a mayor's forum on high-quality urban development in the new era, the Exquisite City Forum, 12 different activities and themed exhibitions, as well as a release ceremony for innovative research.

The event is co-organized by China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, UN-HABITAT, and the People's Government of Shandong Province.

World Cities Day is an annual UN observance held on October 31. It provides an opportunity to promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, advance cooperation among countries to address urbanization challenges, and contribute to sustainable urban development worldwide.
