As an essential gateway to China's massive market of over 1.4 billion people, the China International Import Expo (CIIE) is a concrete action China has taken to promote a shared future, said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after attending the opening ceremony of the seventh CIIE and related events.
In 2018, China launched the CIIE to support trade liberalization and economic globalization and open up the Chinese market. It is the world's first national-level expo focusing exclusively on imports.
The first six editions of the event generated a total intended transaction amount exceeding 420 billion U.S. dollars.
Anwar said the CIIE is a true action of the Chinese government to promote shared value and shared future stressed by President Xi Jinping.
"You have this initiative by China, CIIE, where they showcase the tremendous success of the Chinese companies and products. But at the same time, they give avenues to smaller products from smaller countries, or major products, so that the Chinese would also be able to select and support. This is what I mean, shared value, shared future the president is talking about. It's true action, that you actually, the government takes the initiative to support the program to encourage Chinese industries and players, and Malaysian, all the other from other countries, to participate," said Anwar.
The prime minister highlighted Malaysia's high-tech products, noting that the Chinese market's demand on the country's specialty products helped Malaysia grow its economy.
"Malaysia has been able to progress in the high-end of technology including semiconductor, where we are becoming a major section and hub for the region. But there are also some other products in all fields with the Chinese also involved in. But then we have some ace (products), for example, in terms of which is popular in China, including bird's nest, or durian, and... which is remarkable also for developing economy," said Anwar.
