Israeli PM claims responsibility for deadly pager attack on Hezbollah

      2024-11-11 14:52 Last Updated At:18:47

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admitted on Sunday that he had greenlighted a deadly attack targeting Hezbollah in September, in which thousands of handheld pagers or walkie-talkies exploded across Lebanon and parts of Syria.

Netanyahu said at a weekly cabinet meeting that he wanted to launch the pager operation.

The pager explosion and the assassination of former Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah were carried out despite the opposition of some senior officials in the defense establishment and the political echelon in charge of them, Netanyahu said.

According to Israel's leading newspaper Yediot Achronot and other media outlets, this can be seen as Netanyahu claiming responsibility for the attack, which sharply escalated cross-border hostilities between Israel and Lebanon that have persisted since October 2023.

The operation, conducted in two waves on September 17 and 18, involved the detonation of thousands of explosive-laden pagers and hundreds of walkie-talkies across Lebanon and Syria, aiming at Hezbollah members. At least 42 people were killed and more than 3,400 injured during the attack, according to Lebanese reports.

China's first domestically made large cruise ship, Adora Magic City, set sail from China's Qingdao International Cruise Terminal on Sunday to South Korea and Japan with over 4,000 tourists boarded, marking their first appearance at a Chinese port outside its homeport in Shanghai.

The cruise, named after Shanghai's nickname, began its commercial operations in January 2024 with over a hundred voyages. On April 6 and 10, the ships will embark two five-day, four-night international cruises from Qingdao City in east China's Shandong Province to Jeju in South Korea and Fukuoka in Japan.

The Adora Cruises with two large ships, Magic City and Mediterranean, have served over 560,000 tourists from China and abroad. Its second domestically made cruise ship, the Adora Flora City, has completed the main hull assembly and is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026. Similarly, the cruise ship is named after the nickname of south China's Guangzhou, "Flower City," where it plans to launch its international services.
