The sustained, sound and steady development of China-Japan relations is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian in Beijing on Monday.

Lin made the remarks after leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Shigeru Ishiba was reelected as the country's prime minister on Monday.

Lin did not comment directly on Ishiba’s re-election, saying that this is Japan’s internal affair. However, he expressed hopes for Japan to strengthen its relationship with China.

"The sustained, sound and steady development of China-Japan relations is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples. We hope that Japan will walk towards the same destination with China, abide by the principles and common understandings of the four China-Japan political documents, comprehensively advance the strategic relationship of mutual benefit and work to build a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship fit for the new era," he said.
