U.S. full support for Israel aggravates regional tensions: Iranian spokesman

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said on Monday that U.S. government's full support for Israel further escalates tensions in the region, expecting the new U.S. government will stop Israel's criminal behavior in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

Baghaei made the remarks when elaborating on Iranian government's position on US-Iran relations and hot issues in the region at a regular press conference.

Regarding US-Iran relations, Baghaei said that the United States has had a hostile policy toward Iran in the past four years, and U.S. President Joe Biden failed to fulfill the promise he made during the election on issues such as the negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue.

In addition, Baghaei condemned the U.S. government's full support for Israel by providing political and military aids to it, which has led to continued tension in the region.

"The incumbent U.S. government is hoped to prevent the escalation of regional conflicts and stop Israel's criminal behavior in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon in its remaining time. What is important is that the new U.S. government can learn lessons and abide by its campaign promises," he said.

When talking about Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi's travel to Tehran this week for high-level talks with the Iranian government, Baghaei said Iran does not include the development of nuclear weapons as part of its defense plan and his country will take its nuclear commitments seriously. He also said that Iran hopes the IAEA can overcome political pressure from some countries and conduct consultations and negotiations with Iran in an independent, professional and non-political manner.

2024-11-16 02:25 Last Updated At:04:17

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called for stronger relations between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) and enhancing the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries in efforts to boost development and foster regional peace.

Xi made the remarks in his meeting with ROK President Yoon Suk-yeol on the sidelines of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, which is being held on Friday and Saturday in Lima, capital of Peru.

"The past two years have seen many changes in the international and regional situation, but bilateral ties between China and ROK have maintained a momentum of development on the whole. No matter how the situation changes, China and ROK should stick to the original intention in establishing diplomatic ties, firmly adhere to the direction of good-neighborliness and friendship, and remain committed to the goal of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. The two sides should give full play to the advantages of geographical proximity, cultural affinity and economic integration to strengthen exchanges and deepen cooperation, and promote a sound and steady development of the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries, so as to better benefit the people of the two countries and make greater contribution to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity. I am also ready to play a leading role with Mr. President in this regard," said Xi.

This year's APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting takes place under the theme "Empower, Include, Grow", gathering heads of state and other dignitaries from 21 member economies across the Asia-Pacific region, including China, the United States, and other major economies in Southeast Asia.
