The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' pursuit of Taiwan independence following the U.S. "decoupling" agenda could harm local businesses, Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a press conference on Wednesday.
Zhu made the remarks in response to media reports that the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has agreed to halt supplying specific chips to clients on the Chinese mainland at the U.S. request.
"Promoting cross-Strait industrial cooperation benefits business development and enhances people's well-being on both sides of the Strait. The relevant reports reaffirm that the U.S. is playing the 'Taiwan card' to escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with the aim of using Taiwan to contain China. The DPP authorities, in their attempt to rely on external forces to seek Taiwan independence, have blindly followed the U.S. in promoting decoupling and disruption of industrial and supply chains, creating additional artificial barriers to cross-Strait industrial cooperation. Their approach will ultimately harm the interests of Taiwan businesses, weaken the competitive edge of Taiwan's related industries, and cause Taiwan to further miss out on future industrial development opportunities," said Zhu.
"The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair which brooks no foreign interference. The DPP authorities, for their self-interests, insist on serving as pawns of external forces playing the 'Taiwan card', and they will be abandoned eventually. We hope that Taiwan compatriots will recognize the situation, firmly oppose 'Taiwan independence' separatist efforts and external interference, and earnestly safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and their own security and well-being," said Zhu.
