The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' pursuit of Taiwan independence following the U.S. "decoupling" agenda could harm local businesses, Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, told a press conference on Wednesday.

Zhu made the remarks in response to media reports that the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has agreed to halt supplying specific chips to clients on the Chinese mainland at the U.S. request.

"Promoting cross-Strait industrial cooperation benefits business development and enhances people's well-being on both sides of the Strait. The relevant reports reaffirm that the U.S. is playing the 'Taiwan card' to escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with the aim of using Taiwan to contain China. The DPP authorities, in their attempt to rely on external forces to seek Taiwan independence, have blindly followed the U.S. in promoting decoupling and disruption of industrial and supply chains, creating additional artificial barriers to cross-Strait industrial cooperation. Their approach will ultimately harm the interests of Taiwan businesses, weaken the competitive edge of Taiwan's related industries, and cause Taiwan to further miss out on future industrial development opportunities," said Zhu.

"The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair which brooks no foreign interference. The DPP authorities, for their self-interests, insist on serving as pawns of external forces playing the 'Taiwan card', and they will be abandoned eventually. We hope that Taiwan compatriots will recognize the situation, firmly oppose 'Taiwan independence' separatist efforts and external interference, and earnestly safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and their own security and well-being," said Zhu.

APEC ministerial meetings show consensus spirit: chair

2024-11-14 15:00 Last Updated At:15:37

The upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is likely to yield more consensuses based on the positive outcomes achieved at the previous 2024 APEC Ministerial Meetings, said Carlos Vasquez, 2024 Chair of APEC Senior Officials' Meetings.

The APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held on Friday and Saturday in the Peruvian capital Lima.

"What we have been able to demonstrate [is] that consensus is possible to be reached in APEC, because we have already adopted 10 ministerial statements by consensus and five additional deliverables, technical, political documents by consensus too. So these four last deliverables are extremely difficult, very complex, but I think that there is a sort of consensus spirit this year and I am optimistic regarding the possibility of having these additional four deliverables adopted by consensus by the end of this week," said the official.

APEC Ministerial Meetings play a crucial role in preparing and informing the APEC Leaders' Meeting. Several ministerial meetings for the APEC 2024, including meetings on finance, trade, tourism, have been held throughout the year.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) began in 1989 as an informal dialogue group, and has since become the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment across the Asia-Pacific region. APEC currently has 21 members.
