China urges int’l community to jointly work for Sudan’s peace

China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Tuesday called on the international community to work together for peace and stability in Sudan.

At a UN Security Council Meeting on Sudan and South Sudan, Fu said the conflict still drags on in Sudan, but the international community has made limited progress in promoting ceasefire, and civilians are at the brunt of the persistent conflict.

The current priority for the international community, according to Fu, is to explore a comprehensive and sustainable mechanism to solve the problem, strengthen humanitarian aid and promote peace talks to avoid spillover effects of the regional crisis.

"The international community should work with the African Union to promote peace talks between the warring sides, establish a dialogue framework that includes all related parties and quickly find a sustainable path to peace that fits the reality of Sudan. During that peace process, all parties should respect Sudan’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integration, and ensure that Sudanese people play the leading role. Any external interference or imposition of solutions seeking selfish political interest will only lead to turmoil and division, running counter to the goal of achieving peace and stability," said Fu.

He reiterated that China supports efforts to enhance border management, weapon control and coordination of safeguarding security and humanitarian aid while following the vision of building a security community. The international community must also increase attention and investment in the security of the entire region, helping regional countries effectively respond to refugee crises and security challenges, contain conflict spillovers, and maintain lasting stability in the region, said Fu.

APEC ministerial meetings show consensus spirit: chair

2024-11-14 15:00 Last Updated At:15:37

The upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is likely to yield more consensuses based on the positive outcomes achieved at the previous 2024 APEC Ministerial Meetings, said Carlos Vasquez, 2024 Chair of APEC Senior Officials' Meetings.

The APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held on Friday and Saturday in the Peruvian capital Lima.

"What we have been able to demonstrate [is] that consensus is possible to be reached in APEC, because we have already adopted 10 ministerial statements by consensus and five additional deliverables, technical, political documents by consensus too. So these four last deliverables are extremely difficult, very complex, but I think that there is a sort of consensus spirit this year and I am optimistic regarding the possibility of having these additional four deliverables adopted by consensus by the end of this week," said the official.

APEC Ministerial Meetings play a crucial role in preparing and informing the APEC Leaders' Meeting. Several ministerial meetings for the APEC 2024, including meetings on finance, trade, tourism, have been held throughout the year.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) began in 1989 as an informal dialogue group, and has since become the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment across the Asia-Pacific region. APEC currently has 21 members.
