Peruvians from various social sectors are anticipating more development opportunities and stronger ties with China following Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit.

President Xi is scheduled to attend the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in the Peruvian capital Lima, the 19th G20 Summit in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, and pay a state visit to Peru and Brazil, respectively, from Nov 13 to 21.

"Just as I said, the ties between China and Peru have a long history. China is our main trading partner. We will continue our effort in providing policy support to give the EV industry a traction. There is no doubt that Chinese enterprises are industry leaders. We believe Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit will boost relations between the two countries," said Raul Perez-Reyes, Minister of transport and communications of Peru.

Peruvian officials and economists believe that the visit will bring the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries to a new height.

"For us, the relationship with China it is important. We can not only establish significant connections on economic and regional levels but also promote our country's development. President Xi Jinping's visit can strengthen our economic ties, as well as educational exchanges," said Ernesto Bustamante, member of Peruvian Parliament.

"China has made great contributions to the development of Peru. Firstly, China purchases products from us. Secondly, China has provided us with many affordable products such as smart phones and cars, which have improved the living standards of many people," said Carlos Aquino Rodriguez, a professor of International Economics, Asian Economies, San Marcos National University.

APEC ministerial meetings show consensus spirit: chair

2024-11-14 15:00 Last Updated At:15:37

The upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is likely to yield more consensuses based on the positive outcomes achieved at the previous 2024 APEC Ministerial Meetings, said Carlos Vasquez, 2024 Chair of APEC Senior Officials' Meetings.

The APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held on Friday and Saturday in the Peruvian capital Lima.

"What we have been able to demonstrate [is] that consensus is possible to be reached in APEC, because we have already adopted 10 ministerial statements by consensus and five additional deliverables, technical, political documents by consensus too. So these four last deliverables are extremely difficult, very complex, but I think that there is a sort of consensus spirit this year and I am optimistic regarding the possibility of having these additional four deliverables adopted by consensus by the end of this week," said the official.

APEC Ministerial Meetings play a crucial role in preparing and informing the APEC Leaders' Meeting. Several ministerial meetings for the APEC 2024, including meetings on finance, trade, tourism, have been held throughout the year.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) began in 1989 as an informal dialogue group, and has since become the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment across the Asia-Pacific region. APEC currently has 21 members.
