The Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Thursday urged politicians from the United States with ulterior motives to stop political manipulation of Hong Kong-related issues and respect the region's rule of law.
The spokesperson from the Commissioner's Office issued a statement expressing strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition in response to a letter from certain members of the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China to the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, which maliciously slandered human rights and the rule of law in Hong Kong and openly lent support to those who are anti-China and engage in destabilizing Hong Kong such as Jimmy Lai.
The spokesperson pointed out that the level of rule of law in Hong Kong is internationally recognized, ranking higher than the U.S. in the "Rule of Law Index 2024" released by the World Justice Project.
People such as Jimmy Lai have breached the red line of the law, challenged the constitutional order of the SAR and the bottom line of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, seriously endangering national sovereignty, security, and development interests, said the spokesperson.
The SAR's law enforcement and judicial authorities are fulfilling their duties in accordance with the law, upholding the authority of the law and defending national security, which is entirely reasonable and lawful, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson emphasized that the core principle of the rule of law is that laws must be followed, violations must be punished, and law enforcement must be strict.
A small number of anti-China politicians in the U.S. turn a blind eye to their own country's poor record on human rights and the rule of law while openly interfering in the HKSAR's judiciary, which violates the principles of non-interference in internal affairs under international law and basic norms governing international relations, and is a blatant contempt and gross violation of international law and the spirit of the rule of law, said the spokesperson.
The anti-China politicians in the U.S. should recognize the facts, genuinely respect China's sovereignty and Hong Kong's rule of law, maintain an objective and fair stance, stop political manipulation with ulterior motives, cease interfering in HKSAR's judiciary in any form, and refrain from meddling in Hong Kong affairs and interfering in China's internal matters, the spokesperson said.
