China urges the United States to fulfill its special and primary responsibilities in nuclear disarmament and make substantial cuts to its nuclear arsenal, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian on Wednesday.
Lin made the statement at a regular press conference in Beijing in response to a media query regarding comments from a U.S. military official that the U.S. intends to maintain a portion of its nuclear arsenal to deter potential future adversaries.
"The related statements made by the U.S. official reflect the country's outdated mentality of pursuing hegemony and seeking an absolute strategic advantage. The U.S. has in recent years kept upgrading its 'nuclear triad', strengthening the role of nuclear weapons in its national security policies, stepping up nuclear sharing and 'extended deterrence' arrangements with its allies, and advancing forward deployment of intermediate-range missiles and anti-ballistic missiles, which has seriously disrupted global strategic balance and stability, intensified military competition and confrontation, and raised nuclear risks," said Lin.
"The U.S. should fulfill its special and primary responsibilities in nuclear disarmament and further take substantial and substantive cuts to its nuclear arsenal, so as to create conditions for attaining the ultimate goal of complete and thorough nuclear disarmament, and make efforts to reduce strategic risks and promote regional peace and stability,"Lin said.
