China's manned lunar exploration program has completed preliminary key technological breakthroughs and in-depth demonstrations, transitioning into the prototype development phase, said Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China's manned space program on Thursday at the sixth Human Space Symposium.

The two-day symposium started on Thursday in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, and brought together over 800 experts and scholars from the manned space field to share cutting-edge academic research results and discuss the development blueprint of China's manned space program.

"Manned spaceflight technology is one of the most challenging and pioneering fields. By hosting academic conference, we aim to foster exchanges between the scholars in science and technology so as to promote the collaboration between manned spaceflight and various scientific, technological, and industrial sectors in our country," said Zhou.

According to conference reports, the Chinese space station has been operating safely, reliably, and efficiently in orbit for over 1,300 days. The longest cumulative spaceflight time by a single astronaut is 374 days, and the longest single crew mission duration is 192 days. These experiences provide a solid foundation for future manned lunar exploration.

At present, the manned lunar exploration program has completed key technological breakthroughs and in-depth verifications in the preliminary phase and has transitioned into the prototype development stage.

"Our new rockets, spacecraft, landers, and lunar rovers have already been developed, and prototype products are complete. We are currently conducting large-scale tests, including mechanical, thermal, and electrical tests," said Zhou.

While developing manned lunar exploration technology, the near-Earth orbit manned Earth-to-space return technology is also being developed in parallel. This will provide more economical and powerful transportation capabilities for the space station in the future.

"By leveraging the development of the manned lunar exploration program, the near-Earth manned rockets and spacecraft are being developed simultaneously. For example, the near-Earth orbit rocket uses the first stage of the lunar landing rocket, and the second stage is quite similar, though it has fewer engines due to its smaller scale. This is currently the best reusable configuration among China's launch vehicles. It will lead our rocket technology to a new level," said Zhou.
