China highly appreciates Russia's just position of upholding the one-China principle, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.
Mao made the comments in response to a media query on the remarks made by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko on Thursday in an interview in which Rudenko said the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair.
Noting that the United States has violated the one-China principle, Rudenko said that under the pretext of maintaining the "status quo", it has stepped up its military and political engagement with Taiwan and increased its arms sales to the region, aiming to provoke China and create crisis in Asia for its own selfish interests.
"We noted the reports. The one-China principle is a prevailing international consensus and a basic norm governing international relations. China highly commends Russia’s just position of staying committed to the one-China principle and opposing the attempt of using Taiwan to contain China," said Mao.
