China's exhibition in Paris reflects diverse, open characteristics of Tang Dynasty

An exhibition at the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts in Paris offers a vivid glimpse into the diverse and brilliant culture of China’s Tang Dynasty, one of the most influential periods in Chinese history.

The recently inaugurated exhibition, titled “Tang China - A Cosmopolitan Dynasty (7th-10th Century)”, showcases over 200 pieces or sets of exquisite artifacts from 32 cultural and museum institutions in 10 provincial-level regions and cities in China.

It is part of the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and France, as well as the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism.

"Many group visitors have come to see the exhibition, and I gave two guided tours today. I believe the French public has a strong interest in Chinese art. Since not everyone has the chance to travel to China, this exhibition gives them an important opportunity to experience Chinese museum artifacts. The number of visitors continues to grow, especially on weekends," said Sylvie Noirbusson, a docent at the Guimet Museum.

In recent years, outbound exhibitions of cultural relics have become an effective way to present China's culture, history, and values to a global audience. Over the past decade, China's National Cultural Heritage Administration has approved over 300 such exhibitions, spanning countries like the United States, France, Hungary, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Peru, Chile, and more.

"I believe that China-France relations are very close right now. This exhibition not only shows the friendship between the two countries, but also sends a message from China to France: China has the economic resource to support large-scale exhibitions abroad that promote its culture," said a French visitor.

China ranked second in global soft power index

      2025-02-20 22:46 Last Updated At:02-21 00:17

China has overtaken the United Kingdom to take second place on the 2025 Brand Finance Global Soft Power Index, which was released on Thursday.

While the United States retained the top position, China took second spot for the first time with a score of 72.8 out of 100, according to the report published by the British consulting firm Brand Finance.

The annual index, based on a survey of more than 170,000 respondents across 100 countries, assesses the global image of the 193 UN member states and provides an in-depth analysis of 'soft power' across multiple dimensions.

The agency has divided the building blocks of 'soft power' into eight key pillars: business and trade, international relations, education and science, culture and heritage, governance, media and communication, sustainable future, and people and values.

The report also noted that since 2024 China has made significant progress in six of the eight soft power pillars and two-thirds of measured attributes.

This stems from strategic efforts such as the Belt and Road Initiative, an increased focus on sustainability, and stronger domestic brands moving in to global markets, said David Haigh, Chairman of Brand Finance.
