The China Coast Guard (CCG) rescued a fisherman suffering a medical emergency in the waters near Huangyan Dao in the South China Sea on Sunday evening.

At 17:40 on Sunday, the CCG received a distress call from a fishing vessel in the area. In response, a medical team was dispatched with the necessary medical equipment and medications to assist the fisherman.

Upon examination, the 52-year-old fisherman was diagnosed with hypertensive urgency and left hemiplegia, indicating a potential stroke.

After receiving initial treatment, his condition stabilized, and efforts were immediately made to transfer him to a location where further medical assistance could be provided.

By 17:00 on Monday, after more than 20 hours of continuous rescue efforts, the fisherman was successfully transferred to a rescue aircraft.

"The fisherman was in critical condition, but medical resources at sea were limited. We could not give a clear diagnosis and a stroke was suspected. If not sent to a medical institution with better facilities in a timely manner, his life could have been at risk," said Ge Dalong, a doctor involved in the rescue operation. The patient is currently receiving further treatment at a hospital back on shore.
