Cross-Strait CEO Summit opens in Xiamen to discuss new opportunities

The Cross-Strait CEO Summit opened in Xiamen City in east China's Fujian Province on Monday, gathering hundreds of businesspersons from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to discuss new opportunities.

Themed "Building Cross-Strait Industrial Chains for the New Era, Promoting Cross-Strait Economic Integration and Development," the two-day event is aimed at boosting economic ties between the mainland and Taiwan through industrial cooperation.

On behalf of the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Xi Jinping and the CPC Central Committee, Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, sent a congratulatory letter to the summit.

The message is read out at the summit by Song Tao, head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council. "We support compatriots and enterprises from Taiwan in participating in Chinese modernization and share the fruits of development and progress on the mainland," said Song.

Noting that the current exchange is facing difficulties due to the global and regional economic downturn, Liu Chao-Shiuan, co-president of the Cross-Strait CEO Summit, called for efforts to strengthen cooperation in his speech at the event.

"We are committed to enhancing the level of cooperation, expanding cooperation fields, and deepening the integrated development," he said.

Participants shared the latest business figures and gave suggestions on cross-Strait cooperation in interviews on the sidelines of the summit.

"From January to October this year, the investment of Taiwan-funded enterprises in the mainland increased by more than 10 percent despite the economic downturn," said Wu Jiaying, the executive vice president of the Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises on the Mainland.

"At present, the era highlighting artificial intelligence and green and low-carbon development offers a rare opportunity for both sides of the Taiwan Strait to jointly build and develop industrial chains. I think it is very important to build a platform like the Cross-Strait CEO Summit to find cooperation and go global. Entrepreneurs from the mainland can join hands with Taiwan counterparts to expand presence and seek cooperation in the international market," said Chen Hung-chin, a director of the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association.

Residents in Anyang City, central China's Henan Province have been flocking to shops to purchase ingredients for congee, a must-have meal for the upcoming traditional Laba Festival.

Celebrated on the eighth day of the 12th month on the lunar Chinese calendar, the festival is a time to partake in Laba Congee, a thick, dark-colored porridge made with beans and glutinous rice.

"With the Laba Festival approaching, I am here to buy some black beans and glutinous rice to make Laba Congee so we can enjoy the festive atmosphere," said a local resident surnamed Hou.

To meet demand, local supermarkets have prepared ready-made congee packs in addition to high-quality glutinous rice, red beans, green beans, and other ingredients for making Laba Congee from scratch.

"We put these items on the shelves a week ago, and we now have a wider variety available, including ready-made packs, others flavors including mixed nuts and purple sweet potato, lotus seed, and sweet white fungus," said Zhang Cuihong, a staff member at a local supermarket.

As the festival draws near, sales of the ingredients have increased significantly compared to previous years.
