Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday lauded the successful practice of "one country, two systems" in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and expressed his confidence in the promising future of Macao.
The laud came as Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, arrived in Macao to attend a gathering celebrating the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term government of the Macao SAR on Friday. He will also inspect the region.
Speaking upon his arrival at the Macao International Airport, Xi said he is very pleased to visit beautiful Macao.
"This time, I am here to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland, and also to witness the new developments and changes in Macao over the past few years. On this occasion, I would like to extend my sincere greetings and best wishes to all Macao residents on behalf of the central government and the Chinese people of all ethnic groups," Xi said.
"Over the past 25 years, the practice of 'one country, two systems' with Macao characteristics has achieved success widely recognized by the world, showcasing great vitality and unique charm. The country has witnessed rapid and unstoppable development. Macao has been developed as the result of long-term accumulation and steady progress, and is advancing toward a greater future. This is the glory of the Macao residents and the pride of all the Chinese people," he said.
"I believe that Macao will create an even brighter future by fully leveraging the institutional advantages of 'one country, two systems,' working hard and actively promoting innovation," he said.
Describing Macao as "a pearl on the palm" of the motherland, Xi said Macao's development and the well-being of Macao residents have always been on his mind.
"In the following days, I will take the time to tour around Macao to have extensive and in-depth exchanges with friends from all walks of life on the region's development," said the president.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were warmly greeted by Macao SAR Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and Sam Hou Fai, Macao's incoming chief executive, as well as other officials at the airport.
