As winter sets in and the Asian Winter Games draw near, Harbin City in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has opened over 100 free skating rinks to the public, enhancing local ice and snow tourism.

In response to people's growing interest in winter activities, the city has announced that over 110 skating rinks will be open to the public by January 5, 2025. These rinks, located in parks, squares, college campuses, and natural water bodies, are part of the city's initiative to provide accessible ice experiences for residents and tourists alike.

The upcoming 9th Asian Winter Games have further fueled enthusiasm for ice sports, inspiring many residents to lace up their skates.

Located near residential areas, these newly built rinks make it easier for people to enjoy the speed and excitement of ice skating.

"It's great because this rink is very close to my home and my friends' homes, so we can come here to skate together," said local student Zhou Zixi.

"I'm in my 70s now, and skating here is much more convenient than when the rinks were farther away. This location is much closer, and it's great," said Qin, a local resident.

Among the newly opened rinks, three large-scale venues stand out, including one that is set to become the largest in Asia, spanning over 800,000 square meters.

Scheduled to take place from February 7 to 14, 2025, the 9th Asian Winter Games will mark China's first major international ice and snow event since the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

More than 1,500 athletes from 34 countries and regions have registered to participate, with the number of delegations and athletes expected to reach a record high.
