Pistons guard Jaden Ivey sustains leg injury in victory over the Magic

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit guard Jaden Ivey sustained what appeared to be a severe injury to his lower left leg in the fourth quarter of Detroit's victory over the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night.

Orlando's Cole Anthony slipped and fell as he and Ivey went for the ball. Anthony's momentum carried him into Ivey's planted leg, knocking Ivey to the floor. The 22-year-old was in obvious distress as he grabbed for his shin, and Detroit’s medical staff quickly attended to him.

Members of the training staff held up towels to block the crowd's view of the injury and players from both teams formed a circle around him. After a lengthy delay, he was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled out of the arena with a towel covering the injury.

Players from both teams consoled both Ivey and Anthony, who was noticeably shaken by the play.

“It is tough for all of us,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said after Detroit's 105-96 victory. “There's no better person or teammate than J.I. and no one cares more about this than he does. I give the guys credit for getting it done - they care about him and they didn't want to let him down.”

Ivey led the Pistons with 22 points.

India star bowler Bumrah taken for medical scans during 5th test against Australia

SYDNEY (AP) — India star bowler and new captain Jasprit Burmrah was taken for medical scans after experiencing back spasms during the second day of the fifth and final test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Bumrah, who replaced the rested Rohit Sharma as captain for the test, was seen on the television broadcast leaving in a car from underneath the SCG grandstands about an hour after the lunch break on Saturday.

The India team has not confirmed whether Bumrah, the standout player of the series, will be able to bowl again in the match — or bat in India's second innings.

"(He) has a back spasm,” his teammate Prasidh Krishna said. “He went for scans and the medical team is monitoring him, so let’s see.”

The 31-year-old bowled during the first session and did not appear hampered by an injury as he picked up yet another wicket for the series by removing Marnus Labuschagne, to go with his wicket of Usman Khawaja in the final over on Friday.

He bowled one over after the lunch break Saturday before he left the field with figures of 2-33.

Veteran Virat Kohli took over the captaincy for India in Bumrah’s absence.

Bumrah later returned to the SCG as his team batted in its second innings, reaching 141-6 at stumps, for a lead of 145 going into Day 3.

The 31-year-old has an overall series tally of 32 wickets, which is the highest by an Indian bowler in a single series in Australia. Bumrah passed spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, who had 31 wickets from five matches during the 1977-78 series.
