Bills' Allen likely to extend consecutive games starting streak in finale at Pats

QB Mitchell Trubisky. Coach Sean McDermott has already said he plans to rest numerous starters, with Josh Allen scheduled to take the first offensive snap — and not many more — for the purpose of extending his consecutive games starting streak to 115 (including playoffs). That means Trubisky will get his most extensive opportunity to run the offense this season. With several reserves expected to be promoted from the practice squad, one of Trubisky’s objectives will be completing a TD pass to a player who has not yet scored this season. Buffalo has matched the NFL single-season record with 13 players scoring at least one touchdown receiving.

QB Drake Maye. He has thrown a touchdown pass in eight consecutive games, the longest streak by a rookie in franchise history. He also has a 66.8% completion rate so far. The highest completion rate by an NFL rookie quarterback is 67.8 in 2016 by Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott. The highest rate ever by a Patriots quarterback was Tom Brady in 2007, at 68.9%,

Bills starting LB Terrel Bernard has already been ruled out because of a quadriceps injury. S Damar Hamlin will play only if he’s fully cleared after missing three games with a rib injury, with the same applying to WR Curtis Samuel (rib), who’s missed two games. S Taylor Rapp will likely sit out to rest a nagging neck injury. McDermott ruled out promoting veteran S Micah Hyde from the practice squad. ... Patriots QB Drake Maye is dealing with a hand issue. CB Christian Gonzalez remained in the concussion protocol to begin the week. WRs Ja’Lynn Polk (shoulder) and Kayshon Boutte (illness) also missed the first practice of the week. S Kyle Dugger is still bothered by ankle and quadriceps ailments.

Buffalo overcame a 14-0 second-quarter deficit by scoring 24 consecutive points — capped by cornerback Taron Johnson recovering Drake Maye’s errant backward pass in the end zone — in beating the Patriots two weeks ago. ... The Bills are 8-2 in their past 10 meetings, including the playoffs, in a stretch that coincides with Tom Brady leaving New England for Tampa Bay following the 2019 season. The Patriots, under Brady, dominated Buffalo in going 34-4 during his 19-year tenure as starter.

With one more he will reach 10 in each of his first three NFL seasons. ... With 63 tackles this season, Davon Godchaux is the only defensive lineman in the NFL with at least 55 tackles in each of his first four seasons. He had 65 in 2021, 62 in 2022 and 56 in 2023.

Patriots rookie QB Joe Milton is expected to see significant playing time in the finale. Though Maye will likely start the game, Milton will probably get the majority of reps Sunday.

PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — Jimmy Carter 's long public goodbye began Saturday in south Georgia where the 39th U.S. president's life began more than 100 years ago.

A motorcade with Carter's flag-draped casket began at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, where former Secret Service agents who protected the former president served as pallbearers and walked along side the hearse as it left the campus.

The Carter family, including the former president's four children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are accompanying their patriarch in a procession that will take his remains through his beloved hometown of Plains and past his boyhood home on its way to Atlanta.

Carter died at his home in Plains on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

Families lined the procession route in downtown Plains, near the historic train depot where Carter headquartered his presidential campaign. Some carried bouquets of flowers or wore commemorative pins bearing Carter’s photo.

“We want to pay our respects,” said 12-year-old Will Porter Shelbrock, who was born more than three decades after Carter left the White House in 1981. “He was ahead of his time on what he tried to do and tried to accomplish.”

It was Shelbrock’s idea to make the trip to Plains from Gainesville, Fla., with his grandmother, Susan Cone, 66, so they could witness the start of Carter's final journey. Shelbrock said he admires Carter for his humanitarian work building houses and waging peace, and for installing solar panels on the White House.

Carter and his late wife Rosalynn, who died in November 2023, were born in Plains and lived most of their lives in and around the town, with the exceptions of Jimmy's Navy career and his terms as Georgia governor and president.

The procession will stop in front of Carter's boyhood home on his family farm just outside of Plains. The National Park Service will ring the old farm bell 39 times to honor his place as the 39th president. Carter's remains then will proceed to Atlanta for a moment of silence in front of the Georgia Capitol and a ceremony at the Carter Presidential Center.

There, he will lie in repose until Tuesday morning, when he will be transported to Washington to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. His state funeral is Thursday at 10 a.m. at Washington National Cathedral, followed by a return to Plains for an invitation-only funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church.

He will be buried near his home, next to Rosalynn Carter.
